Every child, regardless of their background or ZIP code, deserves fair access to the resources and opportunities they need to succeed. Closing 12 campuses in primarily Black and Brown neighborhoods, especially with no meaningful community input, moves us further away from that goal.
This decision is only the latest politically motivated attack by an unelected, unaccountable board of managers brought here through hostile state takeover against the will of the community. Students, parents, and teachers in HISD have consistently voiced their concerns and opposition to the board's decisions, only to be ignored or even openly antagonized. Combined with the state’s voucher scheme, which robs resources from underfunded public schools to subsidize wealthy private institutions, closing schools in HISD is both poor public policy and an insult to the community.
