This is more than just infrastructure—it’s peace of mind for families who have experienced heartbreak far too often. By investing in smart, collaborative flood control solutions, we are building a more resilient Harris County. Commissioner Rodney Ellis

Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis joined Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher, Houston City Councilwoman Abbie Kamin, and officials from the Harris County Flood Control District on Friday morning to celebrate the completion of the Meyergrove Detention Basin, a major flood mitigation project designed to reduce the risk of flooding in the Meyerland area.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, leaders praised the project as a significant step toward protecting thousands of residents and businesses from devastating flood events. The 7.5-acre basin, located along Brays Bayou, is engineered to hold more than 27 million gallons of stormwater, helping manage overflow during major rainstorms and hurricanes.

The Meyergrove Basin provides flood reduction benefits across 24.31 square miles, an area that includes neighborhoods that have repeatedly suffered flood damage during major weather events, such as the Tax Day Flood, Memorial Day Flood, and Hurricane Harvey.

The project was made possible through a partnership between Harris County, the City of Houston, the Flood Control District, and Congresswoman Fletcher, who helped secure federal support for the effort.

Officials said the basin represents ongoing progress in a broader regional strategy to protect communities from increasingly frequent and severe weather caused by climate change.
