For over five decades, Pride has been a symbol of resistance and hope, it’s not just a celebration—it’s a reminder that the fight for justice must continue every day. Commissioner Rodney Ellis

In a powerful statement marking Pride Month, Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis called for renewed urgency in defending LGBTQIA+ rights amid a wave of legislation targeting marginalized communities in Texas and across the country.

Referencing the 56th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising—a pivotal moment in LGBTQIA+ history—Commissioner Ellis emphasized that the movement for equality is far from over. “That moment ignited a movement, and today, the fight for dignity, safety, and freedom continues,” he said.

The commissioner condemned recent state-level policies that he described as part of a broader attack on civil liberties. These include laws banning gender-affirming care for minors, restrictions on drag performances, and efforts to censor educators for acknowledging LGBTQIA+ people in the classroom.

Commisioner Ellis also drew connections between anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation and other political efforts aimed at suppressing rights, including voter suppression, book bans, attacks on public education, and restrictions on reproductive healthcare. “These struggles are deeply connected,” he said, “and they demand a powerful response.”

Other initiatives include expanding mental health services, reproductive care, and housing programs that specifically support LGBTQIA+ youth and adults. The county has also worked to ensure fair employment protections and launched efforts to promote civic engagement and leadership development within LGBTQIA+ communities.
