Harris County Dedicate 3-Building County Complex after Late Artist John T. Biggers

April 12, 2025 | Houston, TX

Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis hosted a special dedication ceremony to celebrate the naming of a 3-building county complex in honor of the late Dr. John T. Biggers, a celebrated muralist, educator, and founding chairman of the Art Department at Texas Southern University.

Now officially designated as the John and Hazel Biggers Campus, the complex includes the Commissioner Rodney Ellis Administrative Building & Community Center, the Harris County Aquatics Center, and a nearby county office building—all located on El Camino Street in Houston’s historic Third Ward.

The event brought together local leaders, artists, and members of the Biggers family, along with Congressman Al Green, the TSU Debate Team, and Dr. Alvia Wardlaw, Director of the University Museum at TSU. The program featured remarks highlighting Dr. Biggers’ lifelong dedication to art, education, and social justice, and celebrated his enduring impact on generations of artists and students.

Dr. Biggers believed in the power of art to tell stories, elevate communities, and preserve history. Naming this campus after him ensures that his work and mission continue to inspire for generations to come. Commissioner Rodney Ellis
