Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis joined County Judge Lina Hidalgo, Harris County Public

Health (HCPH) officials, and community partners Tuesday morning to provide updates on maternal and child health initiatives at both the national and local levels.

The event coincided with HCPH’s two-day Maternal and Child Health Conference, which gathered leading experts, healthcare professionals, and community advocates to discuss emerging trends, best practices, and collaborative solutions to improve outcomes for birthing persons and their children.

Speakers, including Leah Barton, Interim Executive Director of HCPH; Dr. Ericka Brown, Local Health Authority for HCPH; and Stacey Thompson, Director of Community Engagement and Outreach for Dawn’s Arrival Pregnancy, highlighted ongoing work to address systemic barriers that contribute to maternal mortality and health disparities.

Maternal and child health isn’t just a women’s issue or a family issue — it’s a community issue. We must ensure every birthing person and every child in Harris County has the resources and care they need to thrive. Commissioner Rodney Ellis

The conference sessions covered a wide range of topics, including racial disparities in maternal care, postpartum support, and community-driven approaches to addressing preventable maternal deaths.

The press conference was livestreamed and is available to view on the County Judge's YouTube Channel:
